Virginia’s love of children was pursued at BYU by majoring in Child Development. She married Chandler Shumate and they produced a daughter and twins during their 58 years together. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from San Diego State Nursing School while raising 3 children. She then worked for Children’s Hospital in San Diego in the Pediatric Oncology ward. The hospital received so many letters of appreciation from parents of child patients (even if their child died) that they designed a Ginny Shumate Award to occasionally be given to a nurse that shows that same high level of nursing care. Her career and life was badly altered by a car accident when she was 57. She remained cheerful the last 21 years even though she did not recover from the effects of the accident.
