John Radin, Ph. D.

Dr. John Radin, Plant Physiology and Cotton Production National Program Leader at United States Department of Agriculture, passed away January 24, 2008, from an aggressive form of leukemia.  John was a world authority on the growth of cotton in areas with limited water access.  His research was especially valuable in obtaining the highest yield from watering at specific times during the growth cycle.

John and I both played French horn together and were great friends.  This friendship lasted until his death in 2008.  Despite the distances between each of our families (CA and AZ/MA) we visited several times, the last one in Boston in 2005.  He was a wonderful caring person who was generous and giving.  He and his wonderful wife Tari "adopted" their daughter's friend as a third child in the family.  John's contribution to science was significant.  He worked on how to phase the watering of cotton plans to get the best growth, while at the same time minimizing the water needed.  This research is especially important for impoverished arid regions of the world.
